Adiéu paure Carneval listen the Midi file for this traditional music tune score of this traditional tune
(Farewell, poor Carnival), wailing
Nissart lyrics by Georges Delrieu. Traditional from County of Nice.

You are going away, and I’m coming... The young new year is coming to replace the old one. This end of carnival lament is sung during King Carnival’s cremation, alternately with a farandole (Carnaval es arrivat).

See also Adiu paure Carnaval, a version played during las fecos de Limous, the carnival of Limoux (Aude, France).

1st verse
Adiéu paure (1), adiéu paure,
Adiéu paure Carneval.
E tu t’en vas, e ièu m’en vèni,
A si reveire l’an que vèn.
 Farewell poor, farewell poor,
Farewell poor Carnival.
And you are going away, and I’am coming,
To see each other again next year.

Chorus
Chirichipi, chièu, chièu, chièu...
Scoute-mi, coumpaire Jacou,
Chirichipi, chièu, chièu, chièu...
Scoute-mi cenque ti dièu !
 Chirichipi, chièu, chièu, chièu...
Listen to me, fellow James,
Chirichipi, chièu, chièu, chièu...
Listen what I’am saying to you!

2nd verse
Carnevale, lou bouon Toni
Si laissa tratà de gus.
Lou counouisse, l’antifoni,
Escouta bèn e pi fa bus.
 Carnival, the good boy,
Let himself be treated as a beggar.
He knows it, the old song,
He listens well and is pretending to take no notice.

3rd verse
E toui lu joù, la sièu frema
Noun fà rèn que de rougnà.
Lou sièu noun es « la Carèma »
E soun mourr’ès reguignà.
 And every day, his wife
Does nothing but grouse.
Her name is “The Lent”
And her face is scowling.

4th verse
Li farèn ’na camisola
D’un moucèu de vielh lançòu,
A cada pounch una raiola,
Au mitan un gran rous d’où.
We shall make him a shirt
With a piece of old sheet,
For each stitch a ravioli,
In the middle, a big eggs roux.

5th verse
Amusa-vous, gauda-la vous
Et siguès toujoù countènt.
Luèn dòu tabus en anas vous,
Noun vous faguès de sanc bulhent.
 Let amuse yourself, let delight
And let be always glad.
Go far away from taboos,
Don’t worry.

1. Paure (from pauvre, poor) means here “death”.
