D’argent à une aigle de gueules, au vol abaissé, membrée, becquée et couronnée d’or, empiétant une montagne de trois coupeaux de sable issant d’une mer d’azur mouvant de la pointe et ondée d’argent.

Vèlou ! Vèlou ! listen the Midi file for this traditional music tune score of this traditional tune
(See him! See him!)
Official song of the carnival of Nice 1922
Nissart lyrics by François-Dominique Rondelly, known as Menica Rondelli, and Antony Fenouille, music by Hyacinthe Tarelli. Traditional from County of Nice.

The theme for this year 1922 is “Gargantua et le Pont-Vieux” (Gargantua and the Old Bridge). This tune celebrates the Old Bridge, destroyed that year. It is one of the most joyful tunes of the carnival of Nice.

 1st verse
Velou ! Velou ! Velou !
E doun ? E doun ?
Couma fa lou bulou
Dintre de l’orizoun.
Nissa s’illumina
D’aqui, damoun,
Cadun s’encamina
Souta lu lampioun !
See him! See him! See him!
And where? And where?
How he struts about
On the horizon.
Nice is lit up
Here and there,
Everybody makes his way
Beneath the Chinese lanterns.

Chorus
Ourgia ! Foulìa !
Si mascaren
     E bataien,
Si pessuguen
     E si baien.
Qu sauta ?
     Milanta.
Es un gran bal,
Faguen lu fouol.
Es carneval ! (twice)
 Orgy! Madness!
We dress up
     And we battle,
We pinch
     And we kiss.
Who jump?
     A large number.
It’s a dance,
Let’s messing.
It’s carnival! (twice)

2nd verse
Carneval s’avança,
Jouious, en rei
E plen d’elegança,
Soubre lou Pouònt-Vièi.
Ah ! Sounàs, fanfara !
E boum, canoun !
Cleroun e quitara,
Repetàs la cansoun.
 Carnival moves forward,
Joyous, as a king
And full of elegance,
On the Old Bridge.
Ah! Let sound, fanfare!
And boom, guns (1)!
Bugles and guitars,
Let repeat the song.

3rd verse
Nissa, la regina
D’amour, dei flou,
D’una joia divina
Flourira lu sieù jou !
Pi, d’un beù sourire
Menchoun, farà
Au rei doù sieù rire
Lou sieù pu dous baià !
 Nice, the queen
Of love, of flowers,
With a divine joy
Will decorate her days!
Then, with a pretty smile
Mocking, will give
To the king by her laugh
Her sweetest kiss!

1. The guns, the bugles... In spite of general rejoicing of Carnival, the sounds of the First World War – ended only 3 years and half ago – are still in all the minds.
