Dialogue between the master and the shepherd
Tune Ce n’est qu’un badinage.

This Christmas carol has been published on 1669 in the 2nd book, with number 16.

1st verse
Lou pastre
     Diéu vous gard’, noste mèstre,
     Cercas un autre bergié ;
     Iéu lou vole plus èstre,
     Vous demande moun counjiet.
Lou mèstre
     Tu te sies bèn lèu gasta :
     La jouinesso
     Mau apresso
     Demando rèn que la liberta.
 The sheperd
     God be with you, the master,
     Try to find another shepherd;
     Me, I want no longer to be,
     I ask you to leave.
The master
     You have quickly ruined yourself:
     The youth
     Badly approached
     Asks anything but freedom.

2nd verse
Lou pastre
     Ves’ eici l’enventàri
     De tout ce qu’es au troupèu ;
     Se counten lou bestiàri,
     Mancara pas uno pèu.
Lou mèstre
     Lou bonjour que m’as douna
     Taravello
     Ma cervello ;
     Digo-me dounc vounte vos ana.
 The sheperd
     Here is the inventory
     Of all what is to the flock;
     If we count the livestock,
     Not one skin will miss.
The master
     The regards you have given me
     Torments
     My mind;
     Tell me where you want to go.

3rd verse
Lou pastre
     Iéu m’en vau faire un viage
     Au païs de Betelèn.
     Dounas-m’un pau mei gage,
     Ai besoun de moun argent.
Lou mèstre
     Aqui passon quand s’envan !
     D’ourdinàri
     Lou salàri
     Se pago pas qu’à la fin de l’an.
 The sheperd
     Me, I’m going to have a journey
     To the land of Bethlehem.
     Give me my wages,
     I need my money.
The master
     Here they pass when they leave (1)!
     Ordinarily
     The salary
     Is paid only at the end of the year.

4th verse
Lou pastre
     Mèstre, cresès un sage,
     Venès-vous-en emé iéu ;
     Vous aurés l’avantage
     D’adoura lou Fiéu de Diéu.
Lou mèstre
     Me voudriés proun debita
     Quauco bourlo,
     Marrit chourlo !
     N’es pas à iéu que n’en fau counta.
 The sheperd
     Master, believe a wise man,
     Come with me;
     You will get the advantage
     To worship God’s Son.
The master
     You would want to utter
     Some balderdash,
     Bad servant aid (2)!
     It’s not to me that it’s possible to lie.

5th verse
Lou pastre
     Es fort bèn véritable
     Que lou pichot innoucènt
     Es na dins un estable
     Qu’es auprès de Betelèn.
Lou mèstre
     Que lou Fiéu de Diéu sie na ?
     Pèr lou crèire,
     Lou fau vèire ;
     Iéu pode pas me l’imagina.
 The sheperd
     It’s greatly true
     That the little innocent
     Was born in a cowshed
     Near Bethlehem.
The master
     That God’s Son was born?
     To believe this,
     One has to see that;
     Me, I can’t imagine.

6th verse
Lou pastre
     Veici mei camarado
     Que me vènon averti
     Que la luno es levado,
     Que toutaro fau parti.
Lou mèstre
     Anaren dounc tous ensèn :
     La coumpagno,
     En campagno,
     Vounte qu’anen fai toujour grand bèn.
 The sheperd
     Here are my friends
     Coming to inform
     Of the moonrise,
     In a short while we have to leave.
The master
     So we will go all together:
     The company,
     In countryside,
     Where we go, always does good.

1. I.e. the shepherds come here to see me before leaving me.
2. Chourlo, servant aid; young boy that ties up the sheaves and pours the harvesters a drink.
