La Paisana niçarda
(The Peasant from Nice)
Nissart lyrics by François-Dominique Rondelly, known as Menica Rondelly. Traditional from County of Nice.

1st verse
Regina dai giardin, rosa d’odou,
Souta la capelina siès l’auba doù giou!
Dai nouastre bei valoun siès la splendour,
Per tu souspira, canta lou beù troubadour!
Finda lou beù chinson
Fa lou sieù rigoudoun!
Queen of gardens, rose of fragrance,
Beneath the capelina you are dawn of the day!
Of our lovely small valleys you are the splendour,
For you sighs, sings the handsome troubadour!
Even the beautiful chaffinch
Makes its rigadoon!

Chorus
Rena d’amour, o Paisana siès bella!
Has per tresor lou coulié lou plu pur;
Lou tieù blasoun es la rosa nouvella,
Che douna où cuor lou parfum e l’azur!
Queen of love, oh! peasant woman you are pretty!
For treasure you get the necklace the purest;
Your blazon is the new rose,
Which gives to heart the scent and azure!

2nd verse
When fine sun says you: “Good morning!”
You contemplate on the small grass beauty of the day.
Then, your feet barefooted, while singing,
You go all alone and sow corn.
Below in the small valley,
Bêê!... bêê!... does the sheep.

3rd verse
La terra va durmì, noun cantes plu,
O bella paisaneta, souta lou siel blu.
Soun calme, silensious, valoun, giardin,
Où luen la campaneta fa: “dindindindin!”
Es l’oura che la lus
Saluda l’angelus!
The ground is going to sleep, you no more sing,
Oh! pretty little peasant woman, beneath the blue sky.
They are quiet, silent, small valleys, gardens,
Far off the little bell rings: “ding ding ding ding!”
It’s time when light
Bows angelus!

4th verse
Déessa de l’amour, doù daissemin,
Fai ben la tieù nounetta fin où beù matin!
Tougiou ieù canterai lu tieù tresor,
Velut, capelina, la tieù gran crous d’or!
E tougiou ti dirai:
“Paisana, t’aimerai!”
 Goddess of love, of jasmine,
Have a short nap up to beautiful morning!
Always I’ll sing the treasures,
Velvet, capelina, your great gold cross!
And always I’ll say you:
“Peasant woman, I’ll love you!”
