(The shepherds have a party)
Lyrics by Nicolas Saboly, known as Micoulau Sabòli. Traditional from Provence.
Tune Aimable jeunesse (Amiable youth).

This Christmas carol has been published on 1671 in the 5th book. It appears with number 34 in the Fr. Seguin’s new edition.

1st verse
Lei pastre fan fèsto,
Jogon de soun rèsto,
Volon tous ana
Vers lou Pichot qu’es na.
Garnisson sei biasso
De pan, de fougasso
E de quauque tros de roustit
O de quauque pasti.
Fan milo grimaço
Davans que parti.
 The shepherds have a party,
They make light of their rest,
They all want to go
Toward the Child who was born.
They fit out their lunchbag
With bread, fougasse
And some pieces of roast
Or some meat patties.
They do thousand grimaces
Before to leave.

2nd verse
Toutei lei bergiero
S’envan lei proumiero
E li van pourta
De que l’enmaiouta :
De làni, de faisso
D’un fiéu de madaisso,
De pedas de telo de lin,
De calot, de beguin,
Uno pleno caisso
De post de sapin.
 All the shepherdesses
Are leaving first
And they go to bring him
Enough to wrap him up:
Wool, swaddling clothes
Of skein thread,
Pieces of linen,
Caps, bonnets (1),
A full box
Of fir twigs.

3rd verse
Lou Fiéu de Dieu plouro
Aussitost qu’es l’ouro
Qu’a set o qu’a fam,
Coume d’àutreis enfant :
Sa maire piéucello
Li sort la mamello
De l’un o de l’autre coustat
E li dono à teta ;
Lou Pichot l’apello
E li dis : « Mama ! »
 God’s Son weeps
As soon as it’s time
He is thirsty or he feels hungry,
As do other children:
His virgin mother
Pulls him her breast
On one or the other side
And gives him to suck;
The Child calls her
And says her: “Mum!”

4th verse
La Vierge bèn aiso
Lou pren e lou baiso
E de cent façoun
Caresso soun garçoun.
D’uno voues charmanto
Li parlo e li canto,
Li dis : « Jèsu, vous sias tout miéu ;
Agués pieta de iéu !
Siéu vosto servanto
E vous sias moun Diéu ! »
 The Virgin most pleased
Takes him and kisses him
And in hundred ways
Caresses her boy.
With a charming voice
She speaks him and sings him,
Says him: “Jesus, you are all mine;
Take pity on me!
I’m your servant
And you are my God!”

1. Beguin: bonnet of nursling, often lace, fastened under the chin.
