Lou Brandi dòu vilage
(The Brandi of the Village)
Nissart lyrics by Eugène Emanuel. Traditional from County of Nice.

1st verse
La canson qu’àu mes de Maï
Canton en lo mièu vilage
Es un brandi triste e gaï
Que d’amour n’en ten lengage.
The song during month of May
They sing in my village
Is a sorrowful and cheerful brandi
That, of love, is the language.

2nd verse
Parla dòu bosquet en flou,
Dòu ciel blu, de la verdura,
Dòu rossignou, dei bei jou,
Dòu reveil de la natura.
It speaks about bosket in blossom,
Blue sky, vegetation (1),
Nightingale, beautiful days,
And nature reawakening.

3rd verse
Parla dòu mont e dòu plan,
Dòu pastre, dòu roc sàuvage,
Dòu soulèu, qu’en si couchan
Pinta, endàura lo nuage.
It speaks about mountain and plain,
Shepherd, wild rock,
Sun that, while setting,
Paints, turns the cloud gold.

4th verse
Éu deplora lo destin
De qu, luen de la patria,
Non partagia lu destin,
Li joïa de la familla.
 It, it laments fate
Of who, away from homeland,
Doesn’t share the destinies,
The joys of the family.

5th verse
Éu la plainte vou redi
De la bella delaïssada
Que àu Maï non vé plus veni
La persona tan aïmada.
It, the complaint it says again
From the abandoned belle
That, at May, doesn’t see anymore come
The so beloved person.

6th verse
Su lu debris dòu manoir
Que domina la collina,
Di que si vé, toui lu soir,
Un fantome que camina.
 On remains of the mansion
Which overlooks the hill,
It says that it’s seen, every evening,
A ghost (2) wending.

7th verse
De l’abile menestrié
Repèta l’air lo plus tendre,
Que souta dei castagnié
Au bal nen ven faïre entendre.
 From the skilful fiddler
Its repeats the tenderest tune,
Which, beneath the chestnut trees,
At the (open-air) dance it comes to make us hear.

8th verse
Canta lu juec dei païsan,
Lo travail de la journada,
L’espoir de quor semenan,
Lu frui de la buona annada !
It sings plays of the peasants,
The labour of the day’s work,
The hope [that in] hearts we sow,
The fruits of the good year!

9th verse
Tamben, quora l’àubre en flou,
Lo ciel blu e la verdura
M’annonçon qu’emb’ai bei jou
Va revièure la natura,
So, when the tree in blossom,
The blue sky and the vegetation
Announce me that with beautiful days
Nature is going to be revived

10th verse
Iéu festi lo mes de Maï
En retournan àu vilage,
E dòu brandi triste e gaï
Vàu entendre lo lengage !
I, I celebrate month of May
By going back to the village,
And, of the sorrowful and cheerful brandi,
I go to listen langage!

1. Verdura: in the literal, designates parsley. Here, understand grass and green foliage, i.e. vegetation.
2. May be the ghost Pellegrin?
