La Sirigauda The Shivery

Watercolour by Gustav Adolf Mossa published in Souta l’oulivié (“Under the olive tree”) by Georges Delrieu and Henri Carol, ed. Delrieu frères, to illustrate La Sirigauda.
 1st verse
À la Baissa, la nèu laissa
Sus li faissa blanc mantèu.
Es touta blanca la placeta
Doun s’amoulounon lu paisan.
Belli fiha me faudiha,
Se s’esviha lou soulèu,
Van caminant à la brasseta
En pastrouiant e si riant.
At the Valley (1), the snow leaves
On the terraces white coat.
It’s fully white, the little square
Where are gathering the peasants.
Beautiful girls in skirt,
If the sun is waking up,
Are walking arm in arm
Chattering and laughing.

Chorus
La sirigauda, clac, la, la, clac,
Rescauferà e lou couor e lu tòtou !
La sirigauda, clac, la, la, clac,
Aluenterà lu chacrin e lou frei !
The shivery, clac, la, la, clac,
Will warm up the heart and the bones!
The shivery, clac, la, la, clac,
Will dismiss the sorrows and the cold!

2nd verse
L’embriagoun
     Cadun piha la boutiha,
     La pepiha passerà.
     Pourtas à bèure quauque gotou
Per escaufà lu miéu budèu !
Ai la pansa que mi lansa !
Lou vin dansa, tra, la, la !
Noun li fà rèn, lu miéu vièi tòtou
     La pisteran la dura nèu.
 The drunkard
     Everyone takes the bottle,
     The terrible thirst will pass.
     Bring some glasses to drink
     To warm my guts!
I’ve got shooting pains in my paunch!
The wine is dancing, tra, la, la!
It doesn’t matter, my old bones
Will trample on, the hard snow.

3rd verse
Un ome
     Qu barsèla, qu frastèla,
Qu rampèla, que li fà ?
Sian rèn aqui per li manièra
Ma per si rire e s’escaufà.
     À qu sauta sensa fauta
     Rougi gauta li vendrà.
     Retournerès à la fenièra
Que per manjà e vous courcà.
 A man
     Who’s knocking, who’s rubbing,
Who’s rolling, what does it matter?
We are not here for the manners
But for laughing and warming up.
To the one jumping without mistake
     The red cheeks will come.
You will go back to the hayloft
Only to eat and to go to bed.

4th verse
Lou campié
     Mandianàia, rafatàia,
     Bastardàia dòu quartié,
Mi fan venì la bila cauda :
An desbrilat lu vouostre mùou !
     Galeròtou, sus lu tòtou
     M’au barotou dòu campié,
     La ballerès, la sirigauda,
Mé patassola sus lou cùou !
 The rural guard
     Mischiefs, brats,
     Bastards in the neighbourhood,
They are making me the terrible rage to come:
     They unbridled your mules!
     Galley slaves, on your bones
     With the rural guard’s stick,
You will dance it, the shivery,
     With smack on the bottom!

5th verse
Lou curat
     De la glèia scura, vièia
     E proun frèia, fouora siéu.
     Veni de dire la miéu messa ;
Mi siéu gelat lu doui artèu !
     Aspersori, tabalori,
     Purgatori, ma que diéu ?
Senti lou mènt que si devessa.
     Sirigaudèn toui au soulèu !
 The parish priest
     From the obscure, old church
And quite cold, I came out.
     I have just celebrated my mass;
     I froze my two toes!
     Aspersorium, silly,
     Purgatory, but what god?
     I feel my mind reeling.
Let’s all sirigaude in the sun!

1. Baissa: term of agriculture, refering to a valley, low lands...
