D’argent à une aigle de gueules, au vol abaissé, membrée, becquée et couronnée d’or, empiétant une montagne de trois coupeaux de sable issant d’une mer d’azur mouvant de la pointe et ondée d’argent.

Les Tendres Souhaits listen the Midi file for this traditional music tune score of this traditional tune
(The Tender Wishes)
or Que ne suis-je la fougère ?
(Why am I not the fern?)
Poem by Charles-Henri Ribouté, music by Antoine Albanese ? Giovanni Battista Pergolesi ?

1st verse
Que ne suis-je la fougère
Où, sur la fin d’un beau jour,
Se repose ma bergère
Sous la garde de l’amour ?
Que ne suis-je le zéphyre (1)
Qui rafraîchit ses appas (2),
L’air que sa bouche respire,
La fleur qui naît sous ses pas ?
Why am I not the fern
Where, on the ending of a beautiful day,
Is resting my shepherdess
Under guard of Love?
Why am I not the zephyr
Which cools her lures,
The air that her mouth breathes,
The flower which is born under her steps?

2nd verse
Que ne suis-je l’onde pure
Qui la reçoit dans son sein ?
Que ne suis-je la parure
Qui la couvre après le bain ?
Que ne suis-je cette glace,
Où son minois (3) répété
Offre à nos yeux une grâce
Qui sourit à la beauté ?
Why am I not the pure waters
Which receives her in the bosom?
Why am I not the finery
Which covers her after the bath?
Why am I not this mirror,
Where her repeated little face
Offers to our eyes a grace
That smiles to the beauty?

3rd verse
Why cannot I, by mean of a dream,
Hold her enchanted heart?
Why cannot I, from the lie,
Pass toward the truth?
Gods who give me the being
Make me too ambitious,
As at least I would be
All what is suiting to her eyes!

1. Or zéphyr, from Greek zephuros, gentle and pleasant wind blowing from the Occident.
2. Plural of appât, indicating the lady’s charms.
3. Sometimes miroir, “mirror” (for image, “picture”?)
4. Sometimes « qui m’ont donné d ’être », “who give me to be”.
