Butterfly, let go and find flowers!

1st verse
De nouostri maioun avèn escapat
     Per estr’a l’arenta
     Dai nouostr’amourous.
Lu rescountrerèn au cantoun dòu prat,
     Doun poussa de menta
     Au perfum tant dous.
 From our houses we escaped
     To go and meet
     Our lovers.
We will meet them by the meadowside
     Where grows mint
     With a so sweet scent.

2nd verse
— Lou miéu farluquet a de belli man,
     De fini manièra,
     Pi sau ben parlà.
— Lou miéu bouon amic noun es qu’un paisan.
     L’ai vist ièr au sera,
     M’a gaire parlat.
 — My whippersnapper (1) gets pretty hands,
     Good manners,
And he is a good speaker.
— My boy friend is only a peasant.
I saw him yesterday in the evening,
He didn’t really talk to me.

3rd verse
— Per una crous d’or que mi va pourtà,
     Me quauqui baieta
     L’ai encigalat.
— Ièu, noun n’ai rèn fach que de l’escoutà.
     Siéu una fiheta
     E noun auji pas !
 — For a golden cross he is going to bring me,
     With some kisses
     I got round him.
— Me, I only listened to him.
     I’m a young girl
     And I don’t dare!

4th verse
— Ai cuhit de flou, de flou d’aubrespin.
     Faran garnidura
     Au vouostre courpet (2).
— Li vèu perlejà l’aiga dòu matin !
     Ensin la natura
     Manda soun afet.
 — I’ve picked flowers, hawthorn blossoms.
     They will make trimming
     On your bodice.
— I see there forming the morning water (3)!
     In this way the nature
     Sends its affection.

5th verse
— Ma perqué noun vèn, lou miéu bèu moussù,
     Lou miéu calignaire
     Que m’aimava proun ?
— Noun l’avès gardat ? Segur s’ès perdù !
     Li a en lou terraire
     Tant de coutihoun !
 — But why doesn’t he come, my pretty mister,
     My lover
     Who loved me so much?
— You didn’t keep him? He surely lost his way!
     There are in the country
     So much petticoats!

6th verse
— Ben de farluquet v’en proumetteran.
     Veirès dei proumessa
     Mancou lou coulou !
— Lu ver amourous si countènteran,
     Per touta riquessa,
     D’un massoun de flou !
 — Many whippersnappers will promise you.
You will see, of the promises,
     Not even the color!
— The true lovers will content themselves,
For the only wealth they will have,
     With a bunch of flowers!

1. Farluquet: from the old French freluque, tuft of hair.
2. In his Dictionnaire niçois-français, Georges Castellana gives: courset.
3. I.e. the dew.
