(Over there in this garden)
Traditional song from la Tour-sur-Tinée, County of Nice.

This song is a local arrangement from the poem Consert dei passeron (1) (Concert of the passerines) by Jean-Charles Passeron from Lantosque (1713-1803).

1st verse
Ailà n’aquèu jardì
Es un bèu galofre, un jaissemì,
Un bàliqui splendi,
Uno majourèno e flou de li,
Sou gauch e sou sanjouà,
Roso e tulipà
Soun aquì per flourì
E so viouleto es do cuhì.
 Over there in this garden
There are a beautiful carnation, a jasmine,
A magnificent gillyflower,
A marjoram and [a] lily flower
The marigold and the lavender,
[The] tose and [the] tulip
Are here to bloom
And the violet is to be picked.

2nd verse
Aiglo e esporvié
Sero e matì siblon voulentié.
Merlo e bel quinsou
Per nouostre plasir dion uno cansoun.
Sou jai, sou darnagas
Calon dòu roumegas,
Sauton su sou camì
E so ballorino fà vis-à-vì.
 Eagle and sparrowhawk
Evening and morning whistle gladly.
Blackbird and beautiful chaffinch
For our pleasure say a song.
The jay, the shrike
Fly down from the bramble bush,
Hop on the lane
And the wagtail is facing.

3rd verse
Toriés grans e pichouns,
Venès ensèn, noun faguès de façouns,
Cantas sou mès de mai,
O virà sou brandi manquès jamai.
Jouinesso n’a qu’un tèms,
Fòu tous estre countèns,
Oublidar sei soucis
E coumo de fraires vièure unis.
 Tourettans (1) tall and little,
Come together, don’t make a fuss,
Sing the month of May,
To turn the brandi never forget.
Youth doesn’t last,
We all need to be glad,
To be free of worries
And, as brothers, live united.

1. First verse from Passeron’s poem, in Italianate written form of the time:
       Aiglià dintr’acheu giardin,
Li a un nouveu galofre e un deissemin,
       Un beu balichi esplandi,
Una magiurana e una flou de li,
       Lo gauce e lo tulipan,
