(The angel that has brought the news)
Lyrics by Nicolas Saboly, known as Micoulau Sabòli. Traditional from Provence.
Tune d’un menuet.

This Christmas carol has been published on 1669 in the 3rd book. It appears with number 20 in the Fr. Seguin’s new edition.

1st verse
L’ange qu’a pourta la nouvello
Ei bergié dessus lou coutau
A di qu’uno jouino piéucello,
Anue dins un marrit oustau,
A fach un fiéu
Qu’es Ome Diéu !
Jamai afaire noun pòu ana miéu.
The angel that has brought the news
To the shepherds on the hillside
Said a young virgin,
Resting for a night in a bad barn,
Made a son
Who is man-God!
Never a matter could better run.

2nd verse
Fau qu’eiçò siège lou Messìo
Que lei paires avien proumés
Dins lou libre dei proufecìo,
Que disié que dins quàuquei mes,
Nàutrei veirian
Un bel Enfant
Que pagarié tous lei dèute d’Adam.
It is necessary here has its headquarters the Messiah
That old fathers had promised
In the book of prophecies (1),
Telling that in a few months,
All of us will see
A nice Child
Who will pay all Adam’s debts.

3rd verse
Uno estello coundus lei Mage
Dins la vilo de Betelèn,
Que s’envan pèr li rendre òumage
E li porton de bèu presènt.
L’an adoura,
L’an amira
Coume un Messìo tan fort desira,
A star leads the Wise Men
In the town of Bethlehem,
They are going to pay homage
And bring him beautiful gifts.
They have worshipped him,
They have admired him
As a Messiah so strongly wanted.

4th verse
Mai tournas un pau la medaio
E regardas-la de l’envèr :
Lou veirés sus un pau de paio,
Tout nus au pu gros de l’ivèr,
Dessus lou sòu,
Sènso linçou,
Eu es coucha près d’un ase e d’un biòu.
 But let turn the medal
And look at it on the other side:
You will see him on a few straw,
Stark naked in the bleak midwinter,
On the ground,
Without sheet,
He is laying near a donkey and an ox.

5th verse
L’ase, que recounèis soun mèstre,
Es aqui que li fai la court ;
E lou biòu, que vòu toujour èstre
A l’entour de soun bon Segnour
Pèr l’escaufa
De tout coustat,
Aquéu pauret fa jamai que boufa.
The donkey, that recognize its master,
Is here paying court to him;
And the ox, that always wants to be
Around its good Lord
To warm him up
On each side,
This poor small animal does only blowing.

6th verse
N’es pas rèn tout ce qu’éu enduro
Auprès de ce qu’endurara :
Ni lou fre ni la jaladuro,
Sara pas ce que lou tuara.
Dessus la Crous
Mourra pèr nous,
E pièi saren à jamai benurous.
It’s not nothing all he is enduring
Compared to all he will bear:
Neither the cold nor the frostbite,
All of that will not kill him.
On the Cross
He will die for us
And then we will be blessed forever.
