(Dear Lord! What a great brightness!)
Lyrics and music by Nicolas Saboly, known as Micoulau Sabòli. Traditional from Provence.

1st verse
Bon Diéu ! la grand clarta !
Li a quaucarèn d’estrange :
Me sèmblo qu’es un ange,
Car iéu l’ai ausi cantà.
Dear Lord! What a great brightness!
There is something strange:
It seems it’s an angel,
Because I’ve heard him singing.

2nd verse
Qu vòu bouta cinq sòu,
Que quauque gros desastre
Siegue arribat ei pastre,
Que courron coume de fòu !
Who want to bet a penny
Some great disaster
Happened to shepherds,
They are running flat out!

3rd verse
Lou jas es tout badiéu,
Li an pas bouta la cledo :
Mòutoun, agnèu e fedo
Soun à la gàrdi de Diéu.
 The sheepfold is wide open,
They don’t put the key:
Sheep, lambs and ewes
Are in God’s care.

4th verse
Diéu age bono part !
Un veissèu à la vélo,
Coundu pèr uno estello,
Vèn en ribo de la mar.
 God gets the good share!
A sailing vessel,
Led by a star,
Comes by the seaside.

5th verse
Qu me dira vount van,
Qu me dira d’ount vènon
Très bèu Moussu que tènon
Lou lengage dòu Levant ?
Who will tell me where are going,
Who will tell me from where are coming
Three handsome men speaking
The language from Levant?

6th verse
Tu cregnes rèn la fre,
Traite, vilèn Erodes !
Vount vas ? que vos ? que rodes
Emé tei coupo-jarret ?
You are not afraid of coldness,
Traitor, wicked Herod (1)!
Where are you going? What do you want? Who are you thrashing
With your cutthroats?

7th verse
As de marrit dessèn
Que valon pas lou diable ;
Au mens, pèr lei coupable,
Prengues pas leis Innoucènt.
 You have bad intentions
That are not worth the devil;
At least, for the culprits,
Don’t take the Innocents.
