Jujas un pau de quinto sorto
(Let judge slightly about what kind)
Lyrics and music by Nicolas Saboly, known as Micoulau Sabòli. Traditional from Provence.
Tune C’est un plaisir dans le bel âge.

Nicolas Saboly has proposed two versions for this Christmas carol, whose first one is on familiar tune C’est un plaisir dans le bel âge (It’s a pleasure in the best years).

This Christmas carol has been published on 1672 in the 6th book. It appears with number 42 in the Fr. Seguin’s new edition.

1st verse
Jujas un pau de quinto sorto
Lou bou Jèsus es à cubert:
Noun li a ni fenèstro ni porto,
Aquel estable es tout dubert,
E fai uno auro qu’es pu forto
Que noun sara de tout l’ivèr.
Let judge slightly about what kind
The good Jesus is under cover:
There is neither window nor door,
This cowshed is whole open,
And there is a wind that is stronger
Than it will be dor the whole winter.

2nd verse
Aquel enfant dono dins l’amo!
Es tout nus sus de paioussas,
E sa Maire, la bono Damo,
Li voudrié caufa soun pedas:
Mai coume n’i’a ni fio ni flamo,
Lou li met fre coume de glas.
 This child takes to loving!
He is completely naked on old straw,
And his Mother, the good Lady,
Would want to warm his feet:
But as there is neither fire nor flame,
She lays he down cold as ice.

3rd verse
N’i’a que dison que l’enfant plouro:
Pèr iéu, l’ai rèn ausi ploura.
Voudriéu que me diguèsson quouro
An vist que se sie rancura:
Eu s’acoustumo de bono ouro
Ei tourmen que dèu endura.
There are who say the child is weeping:
For me, I haven’t heard him weeping.
I would want they tell me when
They have saw he to exclaim:
He, he accustoms early in life
To torments he will have to endure.

4th verse
La bono Vierge es fort moudèsto,
Dins uno grando umelita:
Pode pas vous dire lou rèsto
De tous lei trèt de sa bèuta,
Car lou vouelo qu’a sus la tèsto
M’en a bèn rauba la mita.
The good Virgin is very modest,
In a great humility:
I can’t tell you the rest
Of all features of her beauty,
As the veil she wears on her head
Was hiding half to me.

5th verse
S’es jamai vist dins la naturo
Rèn de si dous, rèn de si bèu!
Es pu bloundo que la daururo,
Cent fes pu douço que lou mèu!
Vous voudriéu faire sa pinturo,
Se saviéu mena lou pincèu.
It was never seen in the nature
Nothing as so sweet, nothing as so beautiful!
She is fairer than gilt,
One hundred sweeter than honey!
I would want to make her portrait for you,
If I was knowing how to lead the brush.
