Damoun, damoun su la mountagna
Rouseta garda lu moutoun.

La crous d’argèn au cadenoun.
Up there, up there on the mountain
Rosy looks after the sheep.
Rosy wears the capelina,
The silver cross with the small chain (1).

2nd verse
Su lou camin un moussù passa :
« Fiheta, quand gagnes per an ?
— Moun bouon moussù, gagni pas gaire,
N’en gagni que cent fran per an.
On the lane a gentleman passes:
“Little girl, how much do you earn a year?
— My dear sir, I don’t earn very much,
I earn only one hundred francs a year.

3rd verse
— Vene mé iéu, bella pastressa,
N’en gagneras mai de cinq cent.
— Bouon moussù, pas tant de proumessa,
Quitterai pas la maioun !
 — Come with me, beautiful shepherdess,
You will earn more than five hundred.
— Dear sir, not so promises,
I will not leave my home!

4th verse
« A touti li vouostre proumessa, (twice)
Iéu prefèri la libertà. » (twice)
“To all of your promises, (twice)
I prefer freedom.” (twice)

1. The gold chain worn round their neck was the Nice women’s favourite jewel. Here, the chain carries the silver cross. See La Rouseta de Nanoun (The Nanon’s small rose).
