Segnour, n’es pas resounable listen the Midi file for this traditional music tune score of this traditional tune
(Lord, it’s not reasonable)
Lyrics by Nicolas Saboly, known as Micoulau Sabòli. Traditional from Provence.
Tune Jeunes cœurs, laissez-vous prendre.

The narrator is Saint Peter.

This Christmas carol has been published on 1674 in the 8th book. It appears with number 60 in the Fr. Seguin’s new edition.

1st verse
Segnour, n’es pas resounable
Que loujés dins un estable:
Venès vous metre en repau
Dins un lio plus ounourable.
Vous m’avès douna lei clau,
Iéu vous done moun oustau.
 Lord, it’s not reasonable
You live in a cowshed:
Come and have a rest
In a more honourable place.
You gave me the keys (1),
I give you my house.

2nd verse
Moun Douièn e mei canounge,
Que soun un pau mai de vounge,
Gènt de sèn e de resoun,
Faran bèn ce qu’ iéu me sounje,
Garniran vosto meisoun
De tout ce qu’aura besoun.
 My dean and my canons,
They are a little more than twelve,
People with sense and reason,
Will well do what I’m dreaming,
Will fit out your house
With all what will need.

3rd verse
N’i’aura rèn que de daururo,
De reliéu d’architeturo,
D’ournamen e de tablèu
D’uno fort bello pinturo:
Iéu espère que, bèn lèu,
Sara quaucarèn de bèu.
There will be only gold decorations,
Reliefs of architecture,
Adornments and paintings
Extremely well coloured:
I hope that, quickly,
It will be something beautiful.

4th verse
Pèr la vouto, qu’es fort bello,
Li samenaran d’estello,
Mai de milo, pèr lou men;
Lusiran coume candèlo;
Crese qu’efetivamen
Semblara lou fiermamen.
On the vault, which is beautiful,
They will sow stars,
More than a thousand, at the very least;
They will twinkle as candles do;
I actually believe
It will seem firmament.

5th verse
Faran faire uno cadiero
D’uno fort bello maniero
Pèr lei dous plus grand segnour
Que siejon sus la frountiero,
Lorsqu’un chascun à soun tour
Vous vendra faire sa court.
They will make do a chair
Of a very beautiful style
For the two greatest lords
Ruling on the border,
When one, each on his turn,
Will come and pay court to you.

6th verse
Enfin touto ma pensado
Es que siege bèn ournado:
N’i’aura rèn de plus joli,
Se’n cop pòu èstre acabado...
Mai sara, coume se di,
Lou Pont dòu Sant-Esperit.
 At last, my thought
Is this seat well decorated:
There will be nothing prettier,
If once it could be completed...
But it will be, as it’s said,
The Holy Spirit Bridge (2).

1. According to Tradition, Saint Peter is regarded as the first pope and welcomes the souls in Paradise, of which he owns the keys.
2. The foundation stone of Holy Spirit Bridge was laid on 1265, September 12th, but completed on 1309.
