The angel
Sortez d’ici, race maudite!
Quoi! Faudra-t-il de l’eau bénite
Pour vous chasser hors de ce lieu?
Je suis un ange du grand Dieu:
Obéissez à ma puissance,
Voudriez-vous faire résistance?
Ne savez-vous pas que, jadis,
Je vous chassai du Paradis?
 Get out of here, accursed race!
What! Are we going to need holy water
To chase you away from this place?
I’m an angel of the great God:
Comply with my power,
Would you want to put up resistance?
Don’t you know that, in olden days,
I chased you from Paradise?

First demon
Me n’en digues pas davantage,
Iéu counèisse proun toun visage;
Sai pas se counèisses lou miéu,
Iéu te vole dire quau siéu:
Es iéu qu’ai fa lou cop de mèstre
Dedins lou Paradis terrèstre,
Quand, sout la formo d’un serpènt,
Ai mes la poumo sout lei dènt
D’Adam e d’Èvo sa coumpagno.
 Don’t tell me more,
I know enough your face;
I don’t know if you are acquainted with mine,
I want to say you who I am:
It’s me who have done the masterstroke
In the Garden of Eden,
When, in the guise of a snake,
I’ve put the apple to eat
To Adam and Eve his partner.

Second demon
 It’s me who have given sorrow (1)
In the past to the good man Joseph,
When I was going to set fire
To his flocks, to his barns,
And when I was taking life away
From seven or eight of his childs!
For me, I grieved him so much,
From his feet to his head,
That he was saying he had left over.

First demon
Es iéu qu’ai douna lou dessèn
De massacra leis Innoucènt.
 It’s me who gave intention
To massacre the Holy Innocents (2).

Second demon
Vount creses-tu que deviéu èstre,
Quand Judas traïguè soun Mèstre?
Ère toujour à soun coustat
Pèr lou sedurre e lou tenta;
Iéu l’óubliguère de lou vendre,
Li counseière de se pèndre,
Li fourniguère lou licòu,
Jitère sei tripos au sòu:
Après acò, que vos-tu dire?
 Where do you think I had to be,
When Judas was betraying his master?
I still was beside him
To seduce and tempt him;
Me, I obliged him [Judas] to sell him [Jesus],
I advised him to hang him (3),
I supplied him with the halter,
I flung his guts to the ground:
After that, what do you want to say?

First demon
Iéu ai bèn fach incaro pire,
Quand siéu ana deça, dela,
Pèr espóussa toutei lei blad!
 Me, I’ve done much worse,
When I went, here and there,
To shake all the fishes.!

Second demon
Es iéu que, d’un soul cop de pigno,
Ai penchina toutei lei vigno;
Li ai gaire leissa de rasin:
Eitambèn n’i’a gaire de vin.
 It’s me who, with a single comb run,
Have carded the whole vineyard;
I’ve left them not much grapes:
So there is not much wine.

First demon
Iéu ai tan fa toumba de grelo
Qu’ai peri toutei leis amelo:
Eitambèn n’i’a gis de nougat,
O se n’ia, lou faudra paga.
 Me, I’ve made so much hail to fall
That I’ve ruined all the almonds:
So there is no nougat,
Or if there is, they will have to pay for it.

Second demon
Iéu siéu vengu, sens ana querre,
Vèire la glèiso de Sant Pierre,
Lou plus grand de meis enemis,
Que tèn lei clau de Paradis;
M’a plus vougu douvri la porto:
Iéu l’aïsse de talo sorto
Que li vole tout ravaja.
 I came, without being asked,
To see the church of St. Peter (4),
The greatest of my enemies,
Who holds keys of the Paradise;
He didn’t want to open me the door:
Me, I hate him in such a way
That I want all devastate there.

First demon
Aro èi lou tèms de se venja. Now it’s revenge time.

Second demon
Iéu vole escafa la pinturo. Me, I want to erase the paintwork.

First demon
Iéu vole escaia la daururo
E brisa tous leis ournamen.
 Me, I want to chip the gilding
And break the whole adornments.

Second demon
Vole estrassa lei paramen,
Afin que sache qu’iéu lou morgue!
 I want to crease the facings,
In order that he know that I scoff at him!

First demon
Iéu vole metre au sòu leis orgue,
Vole creba la souflarié
Que se jogo que pèr darrié.
 Me, I want to put at ground the organs,
I want to puncture the bellows
That is played only by the back.

Second demon
E iéu vole, d’un cop de bano,
Li roumpre toutei sei campano,
Afin que pèrdon lou caquet,
Coume lou paure repliquet.
 And me, I want, with a single butting,
Break there all the bells,
So that to bring they down a peg or two,
As the poor chimes.

First demon
Iéu vole ana cassa lei vitro
Que soun dòu coustat de l’Epitro;
De l’autre las, lou fariéu bèn,
Mai n’i’a gis, à causo dòu vènt.
 Me, I want to go and break the windows
Taht are on the epistle side (5);
On the other side, I well would do,
But there are no more, because of the wind.

Second demon
Soun architeturo es dins l’ordre,
Mai iéu la metrai en desordre:
Vole tout metre pèr lou sòu.
Creses-tu de nous faire pòu?
Cregnèn pas gaire tei menaço!
 Its architecture is in good order,
But I will put it in disorder:
I want to all put on the ground.
Do you believe to frighten us?
We are scarcely afraid of your threats!

The angel
Sortez, sortez de cette place,
Démons, ennemis des humains!
Dieu, qui vous a lié les mains,
Redoublera toutes vos peines
Pour toutes vos paroles vaines.
Sortez, sortez donc de ce lieu:
C’est ici la maison de Dieu!
 Get out, get out this place,
Demons, enemies of humans!
God, who bound your hands,
Will redouble all your punishments
For your fruitless words.
Get out, do get out this place:
Here it’s God’s house!
