Tu que cerques tei delice
(You who look for your delights)
Lyrics by Nicolas Saboly, known as Micoulau Sabòli. Traditional from Provence.
Tune Amarante est jeune et belle.

Nicolas Saboly has proposed two versions for this Christmas carol, whose first one is on familiar tune Amarante est jeune et belle (Amarante is young and pretty).

This Christmas carol has been published on 1673 in the 7th book. It appears with number 53 in the Fr. Seguin’s new edition.

1st verse
Tu que cerques tei delice,
Que n’ames que tei plesi,
N’auras-tu jamai lesi
De dire adiéu à tei vice?
     Pièisque Diéu, helas!
Cerco rèn que lei suplice,
     Pièisque Diéu, helas!
     Soufro dins un jas.
 You who look for your delights,
Who like only your pleasures,
Will never not have you the leisure
To say goodbye to your vices?
     Since God, alas!
Searches for only tortures,
     Since God, alas!
     Suffers in a sheepfold.

2nd verse
Toun oustau n’es pas capable
De louja ta vanita:
Vos un palais encanta,
Sies-tu pas bèn misérable,
     Pièisqu’un Diéu, helas!
Se countènto d’un estable,
     Pièisqu’un Diéu, helas!
     Lojo dins un jas?
 Your house isn’t able
To put your vanity:
You want an enchanted palace,
Are not you quite miserable,
     Since a God, alas!
Contents himself with a cowshed,
     Since a God, alas!
     Lives in a sheepfold?

3rd verse
Au founs de ta cambro novo,
Lorsque tires lou ridèu,
Ni l’art, ni mai lou pincèu
Mancon pas à toun alcovo;
     Mai Jèsus, helas!
N’es pas aqui que se trovo;
     Mai Jèsus, helas!
     Es au founs d’un jas!
 At bottom your new bedroom,
When you close the curtains,
Neither art nor even the paint brush
Don’t skip in your alcove;
     But Jesus, alas!
Isn’t here;
     But Jesus, alas!
     Is in far end of a sheepfold!

4th verse
Lei viando lei plus esquiso,
Lei vin lei plus delica,
Podon jamai trop flata
Toun goust ni ta gourmandiso;
     E Jèsus, helas!
Umo lou vènt e la biso;
     E Jèsus, helas!
     Juno dins un jas!
 Meats the most exquisite,
Wines the daintiest,
Never can flatter
[Neither] your taste nor your fondness of food;
     And Jesus, alas!
Smells the wind and the North wind;
     And Jesus, alas!
     Goes without food!

5th verse
Après qu’as bèn fa ripaio,
Te couches dins un bèu lie
Tout garni de broudarié,
E d’uno fort bello taio;
     E toun Diéu, helas!
Coucho sus un pau de paio!
     E toun Diéu, helas!
     Coucho dins un jas!
 After you well have a feast,
You go to bed in a beautiful bed
Fit out with embroideries,
And quite large size;
     And your God, alas!
Lies on a bit straw!
     And your God, alas!
     Sleeps in a sheepfold!
