Lyrics by Nicolas Saboly, known as Micoulau Sabòli. Traditional from Provence.
Tune Dans le fond de ce bocage.

Nicolas Saboly has proposed two versions for this Christmas carol, whose first one is on familiar tune Dans le fond de ce bocage (In the bottom of this bocage).

This Christmas carol has been published on 1673 in the 7th book. It appears with number 52 in the Fr. Seguin’s new edition.

1st verse
Venès vèire dins l’estable
Aquéu bèl enfant qu’es na;
Vous sarès tous estouna:
N’i’a rèn de plus amirable.
 Let come and see in the cowshed
This nice child who was born;
You will all be amazed:
There is nothing more admirable.

2nd verse
Es d’uno doublo naturo,
Fiéu de l’ome, Fiéu de Diéu;
Es miracle quand es viéu,
Après lei mau qu’éu enduro.
 He is of a double nature,
Son of man, son of God;
It’s a miracle he is [still] alive,
After the evils he bore up

3rd verse
Certos, iéu vous pode dire
Que l’ai jamai vist ploura,
Ni gémi, ni souspira;
Mai bèn souvent l’ai vist rire.
 Indeed, I’m able to tell you
That I’ve never seen him weep,
Neither groan nor sigh;
But very often I’ve seen him laugh.

4th verse
Jóusè lou pren, lou caresso,
E lou sarro entre sei bras:
N’en sara pas jamai las,
Belèu mourra de tendresso.
 Joseph takes him, caresses him,
And clasps him in his arms:
He will never be weary,
Nice face of tenderness.

5th verse
Sa maire, la bono Damo,
Li dis cènt milo douçour:
“Jèsu, moun cor, moun amour,
Vous sias lou rèi de moun amo!”
 His mother, the good Lady,
Tells him hundred thousand gentleness:
“Jesus, my heart, my love,
You are the king of my soul!”

6th verse
De joio touto ravido,
Li parlo d’un toun pu fort:
“Vous ame coume moun cor,
Vous ame mai que ma vido!”
 By joy completely delighted,
She speaks him in a louder voice:
“I love you as my heart,
I love you more than my life!”

7th verse
Jóusèt e la Vierge Maire
Nous ensignoun la leiçoun,
E nous mostron la façoun
De tout ce que devèn faire.
 Joseph and the Virgin Mother
Teach us the lesson,
And show us the way
Of all we have to do.
