(Going down from Cimiez hill)
Nissart lyrics by Jouan Nicola. Traditional from County of Nice.

1st verse
Siéu un gros malurous,
Escoutas jouventura !
Siéu estat amourous,
Ai agut n’aventura.
Un jour ai Cougourdoun,
Ai gastat la miéu vida
Despi de l’abandoun
De la miéu Margarida.
 I’m a real poor man,
Listen, young boys!
I was in love,
I had an adventure.
One day, at [feast of] Cougourdons (1),
I wasted my life
Since the desertion
Of my Margaret.

2nd verse
En calant de Cimiès,
Souta d’una figuièra
Ai rescountrat Nouré
Mé la miéu calignera.
Acò es lou destin
Que lou bouon Diéu n’en douna.
Ai pilhat lou fusiéu,
Ai tuat la pichouna.
 Going down from Cimiez,
Under a fig tree
I met Honoré
With my sweetheart.
That is fate
That good Lord gives us.
I took the shotgun,
I killed the little girl.

3rd verse
E despi d’aquéu jour,
Pensi à l’infidela
En regretant toujou
La siéu fin tant crudela.
Sus lu prat de Cimiès
Vau pourtant la miéu pena,
En plourant lou malur
Doun lou destin n’en mena.
 And since this day,
I’m thinking of the unfaithful
Always regretting
Her so cruel end.
On the meadows of Cimiez
I go, bearing my sorrow,
Yelling on the misfortune
Where the fate leads us.

1. The feast of Cougourdouns (the “small gourds”), standing on the hill of Cimiez, was highly prized by people of Nice, particularly by the youth. It was sung and set to music for instance by Marius Ausello, Jouan Nicola and Menica Rondelly.
