Traditional from County of Nice.
During the carnival on 1878, the supporters of Alfred Borriglione (1) recently elected on January to town council of Nice were singing:
E viva Bourrioun !
Que buòn au cougourdoun (2)
Sensa tan de façoun.
Sounerèn viouloun e quitara,
La festa si prepara.
E viva Bourrioun
Que bèu au cougourdoun,
Que paga la nourissa,
Lou fit de la maioun à touta Nissa. | | And long live Borriglione!
Let’s drink at the small gourd
Without further ado.
We will play violin and guitar,
The party is getting ready.
And long live Borriglione
Who drinks at the small gourd,
Who pays the wet-nurse,
The house rent to all [inhabitants of] Nice. |
While the unfortunate opponents were timidly answering:
Counsouòle-ti, poble de Segurana (3),
Counsouòle-ti, franc e brave Nissart.
Lou tiéu païs oun es plus la cabana
Dòu troubadour, dòu pouèta, de l’art. | | Let console yourself, people of Seguran,
Let console yourself, frank and brave native of Nice.
Your land where is no more the cabin
Of the troubadour, of the poet, of the art (4). |
1. Alfred Borriglione (Nice, 1841 - Sospel, 1902): lawyer at the bar of Nice, deputy and mayor from 1878 to 1886, senator from 1892 to 1902.
